Call for Participation in the TOP500 / Green500 Lists

The TOP500 project was started in 1993 to provide a reliable basis for tracking and detecting trends in high-performance computing. Twice a year, a list of the sites operating the 500 most powerful computer systems is assembled and released. The best performance on the Linpack benchmark is used as performance measure for ranking the computer systems. The list contains a variety of information including the system specifications and its major application areas.

Each year the first TOP500 list is released during the ISC High Performance conference. In 2024, the conference will be held in Hamburg, Germany (May 12 - May 16, 2024) and the SC conference in the USA will be held this year in Atlanta, GA (November 17 -22, 2024).

The List's maintainers are interested in new entries as well as entries that are no longer valid. Please feel free to contact them here if you have questions.

Following is a transcript of the guidelines for submission of entries:

Deadlines

Submission deadline for the June release of the TOP500 List is April 28th (23:59 PST)All system reported have to be installed and submitted by April 19th. The last date for submitting Linpack updates is April 28th.  (Systems must have been submitted by the deadline above).

The deadline for the submission of new sites for the November release of the TOP500 List is October 20th (23:59 PST). All system reported have to be installed by October 27th. The last date for submitting Linpack updates is also October 27th. (Systems must have been submitted by the deadline above).

Submissions

The submission site is now open. Please visit http://top500.org/submit. You might need to create a new account to be able to submit systems.

Please note that this is a completely new interface and you have to create a new login and password.

Submissions should contain the following information:

  • Manufacturer: Manufacturer or vendor

  • Computer system: Type indicated by manufacturer or vendor

  • Installation Site: Customer - Full name of company or institution

  • Location: Location and country

  • Year: Year of installation/last major update

  • Field of Application: Type of customer (university, government, industry, ...) as well as typical application (geophysics, automotive, chemical, benchmarking, ...)

  • Processors: Number of processors (as well as type if necessary)

  • Memory: Main memory configuration of the system

By submitting your application to be included in the List TOP500 published on http://www.top500.org/lists you agree to the following terms and conditions:

  1. To the best of your knowledge, the information you provide to TOP500 and its operator Prometeus GmbH is correct, complete and accurate.
  2. You acknowledge and agree that the decision of TOP500 and its operator Prometeus GmbH to include or not include your name in the list of TOP500 is entirely based on Prometeus‘ discretion and not subject to judicial review. This also applies to the ranking the TOP500 and its operator Prometeus GmbH assigns to you on the list of TOP500.
  3. The TOP500 and its operator Prometeus GmbH may, with or without prior notice and with or without reason strike your name from the TOP500 List. This process and decision is not subject to judicial review.

Linpack performance

Performance numbers for the Linpack benchmark are collected and updated by Jack Dongarra (dongarra@cs.utk.edu). Please report any Linpack performance numbers directly to him.

Method of Solution

In an attempt to obtain uniformity across all computers in performance reporting, the algorithm used in solving the system of equations in the benchmark procedure must confirm to LU factorization with partial pivoting. In particular, the operation count for the algorithm must be 2/3 n^3 + O(n^2) double point floating point operations. This excludes the use of a fast matrix multiply algorithm like ``Strassen's Method'' or algorithms which compute a solution in a precision lower than full precision (64 bit floating point arithmetic) and refine the solution using an iterative approach. This is done to provide a comparable set of performance numbers across all computers. You can obtain an implementation of the appropriate software at: http://www.netlib.org/benchmark/hpl/

Verification

In addition to cross checking different sources of information, we select randomly a statistical representative sample of the first 500 systems of our database. For these systems we ask the supplier of the information to establish direct contact between the installation site and us to verify the given information. This gives us basic information about the quality of the list in total.

Restrictions

As the TOP500 should provide a basis for statistics on the market of high-performance computers, we limit the number of systems installed at vendor sites. This is done for each vendor separately by limiting the accumulated performance of systems at vendor sites to a maximum of 5% of the total accumulated installed performance of this vendor. Rounding is done in favor of the vendor in question.

The main objective of the TOP500 list is to provide a ranked list of general purpose systems that are in common use for high end applications. The authors of the Top500 reserve the right to independently verify submitted Linpack results, and exclude systems from the list which are not valid ornot general purpose in nature. By general purpose system we mean that the computer system must be able tobe used to solve a range of scientific problems. Any system designed specifically to solve the Linpack benchmark problem or have as its major purpose the goal of a high TOP500 ranking will be disqualified.

The systems in the TOP500 list are expected to be persistent and available for use for an extended period of time. Any system assembled to run a Linpack benchmark only, and set up specifically to gain an entry in the TOP500 will be excluded from the list. The TOP500 authors will reserve the right to deny inclusion in the list if it is suspected that the system violates these conditions.
